Sweet Charity

Monday, February 3, 2014

From the creative minds of Bob Fosse and Neil Simon, the Tony Award winning musical Sweet Charity arrives at The Lyric Theatre this March. Sweet Charity follows the ups and downs of a dancer-for-hire working at a dance hall in Times Square. The wild and crazy 1960s musical is a quintessential piece of Broadway history, enjoying several successful revivals and off-Broadway productions.

Based on the Federico Fellini’s screenplay, Nights of Cabiria, Sweet Charity transforms the piece into a crazy adventure featuring the distinct stylings of the legendary dance choreographer, Bob Fosse, and the intelligent hilarity of writer Neil Simon. With music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Sweet Charity was a result of some of the greatest creative minds musical theater has to offer. Following the original production starring Bob Fosse’s own wife, Gwen Verdon, Sweet Charity was revived over 10 times, including the release of a major motion picture starring Shirley MacLaine and Sammy Davis, Jr.

Always the optimist, Charity Valentine works a not-so-glamorous job at the Fandango Ballroom in New York City. Although chances seem slim, Charity hopes for a better life and a chance to find real love. The hired dancer feels that her luck just might be changing when she meets Oscar, a decent guy with a heart of gold. They hit it off and Charity embarks on a journey of self-discovery and love. There’s just one thing: Oscar doesn’t know what Charity does for a living. Can Charity finally find a new life with this new man of her dreams or will her secret destroy their relationship?
