The Lyric Theatre Presents
Capitol Steps
Capitol Steps co-founder Elaina Newport describes the troupe’s exploitations of daily political foibles as “. . . like being a funeral director or a car re-possessor. The kind of business where you wait for something to happen to somebody and then you make money off it.”
What more can be said about the Capitol Steps? After three decades of creating bitingly irreverent political humor – and leaving packed houses rolling in laughter down both sides of the aisle – you’d think they would be at a loss for words, too. Thankfully, our elected officials keep them supplied with fresh material on a daily basis.
Co-founder Elaina Newport says, “When we first started out, we were worried that the politicians would get quietly competent and solve all the problems.” Pause. “We worried for about five minutes.”
The Steps were founded in 1981, when a group of Senate staffers entertained as a gag at an office Christmas party. Like most things in Congress, they didn’t know when to stop. The always-in-demand “Steps” appear weekly in Washington, DC, tour nationally year-round, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio with their “Politics Takes a Holiday” specials.
Although not all of the current members are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the Steps have worked in 18 Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.
If you heard breaking political news yesterday, chances are the Capitol Steps have a new song parody about it ready to perform in tonight’s show. Their material is unpredictable, but non-stop laughs are guaranteed!
