In The Mood

Image: In The Mood

No one captures the indefinable mixture of joy, sadness, love and sentimentality of the World War II era better than In the Mood. More than a nostalgia show, much more than “an amazing reproduction,” In the Mood gives you the feeling of that special time – when men and women danced, sang and loved with abandon, as it if it might be their last moments together. It was a time when Americans, though never doubting for a minute that their ways of life would not change, nevertheless knew that the world would soon, without question, become a different place. This was the 1940s, the era of Dorsey, Miller, James and Goodman. Swing was king, and the Big Bands all competed to see which could give you the slickest rug to cut with your ever-lovin’ sweetie. The Andrews Sisters provided the vocal soundtrack, with such great songs as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.” Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby anf Rosemary Clooney crooned from bandstands coast to coast. In the Mood – the name itself taken from Glenn Miller’s beloved classic, which has been the virtual soundtrack to the era for all these years – consists of the String of Pearls Orchestra (another great Glenn Miller tune!) and the In the Mood singers and dancers. It’s both a trip back in time and a wonderful, state-of-the-art tribute to a pivotal period in our history. On bandstands, in theaters and on the radio, this music – from swinging jazz to yearning ballads – buoyed Americans’ morale and, in a sense, made us all a single community. You don’t have to be an ex-G.I., or a woman who waited for her man to report back from overseas, to understand the appeal of this big, happy show. From ebullient start to razzle-dazzle finish, In the Mood brings the musical past squarely front-and-center, the way it was meant to be experienced.
