Asleep at the Wheel

Over the last 36 years, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel have kept the distinctly American art form of Western Swing alive and kicking.  Along the way, they’ve entertained thousands and won praise and admiration from everyone from Willie Nelson to Bob Dylan, George Strait and Van Morrison.

The nine-time GRAMMY-winning “Kings of Texas Swing” aren’t your typical band –   they’re an institution.  Over the years, the group has featured an ever-shifting line-up of like-minded musicians (over 80 total members to date) united under Benson’s crusade to carry the torch of big band Western Swing into the 21st century.  Their best-known tunes include “Route 66,” “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie,” “Take Me Back To Tulsa,” and “Bump Bounce Boogie.”  Clearly, this is music that won’t let you stay in your seat.  “It’s not ballad heavy,” says Benson.  “We’re a dance band.  That’s what we’re about.  And that’s plenty.”
