The Lyric Theatre Presents

Ben Vereen

Few entertainers today can boast the talent, versatility, career longevity and accomplishments of Ben Vereen.  He has created some of the most memorable characters to ever grace stage and screen, including his early Broadway role as the Leading Player in “Pippin,” which earned him a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Vereen’s stage career has also included starring roles in such iconic productions as “Wicked,” “Chicago,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Jelly’s Last Jam” and “Hair.”  Although his career extends beyond the theater floor boards to television and films, Vereen’s first love will always be the stage.  “The theater was my first training ground,” he says.  “The stage sharpens the creative instrument and encourages you to go deeper and try new things.”

On television, Vereen created the unforgettable role of Chicken George in “Roots.”  His network special, “Ben Vereen:  His Roots,” won seven Emmy Awards.  His film credits include “Sweet Charity,” “All That Jazz” and “Funny Lady” (Golden Globe nomination), among others.

Vereen has performed his one-man show to packed houses throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean.  We are honored to welcome one of musical theater’s most celebrated talents to the Lyric stage.
