​A Darlene Love Christmas – “Love For The Holidays”

In her Lyric debut performance, Darlene Love will ring in the Christmas season with a little Love for the Holidays. Love, with her annual performance of her blockbuster hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on the Late Show with David Letterman and has become a holiday staple for national audiences. Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" first on its list of The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs, saying that "nobody can match Love's emotion and sheer vocal power." Perhaps most famous for her #1 single, “He’s a Rebel,” Darlene Love has dominated the music industry for over 50 years as both a back-up singer and a solo artist. This holiday season, Ms. Love will light up The Lyric stage with her soulful renditions of seasonal favorites.

Called “one of the greatest singers of all time” by the Rolling Stones, Darlene Love began performing as early as high school in an obscure girl-group called The Blossoms. Picked up in 1962 by producing legend Phil Spector, Love quickly became one of the most popular vocalists in the industry, working with some of the greatest performers of the 50s and 60s, including Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, and Sonny and Cher. Darlene Love’s powerful voice can be heard in many of the biggest hits of the time period, such as The Ronette’s “Be My Baby” and Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash.”

Darlene Love has also appeared in a number of acting roles on stage and in major motion pictures and television. Love played the role of Danny Glover’s wife in the four Lethal Weapon movies. Additionally, Love performed in the Broadway musicals Grease, Carrie, and Hairspray. The famous vocalist has also appeared numerous times on Late Night with David Letterman, as well as Saturday Night Live. Most recently, Darlene Love was featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, which chronicled the careers of some of the most 1960s and 70s, which ran as part of The Lyric’s most recent Art Cinema Series.
