Ghalia Volt

No barriers. No boundaries. That’s how Belgian-born, New Orleans-based blues artist Ghalia Volt has always approached American roots music. The blues-rock singer, guitarist, drummer, and songwriter cut her teeth as a street performer in Europe, holding an audience’s attention with nothing to hide behind. She immersed herself in the American roots heritage, blending Hill Country blues, garage, and rock ‘n roll influences with the traditional sound.

Volt grew up listening to the flamenco songs and traditional Spanish music that her grandparents loved. Her tastes expanded from there, making room for the fierce, guitar-driven sounds of punk, garage rock and psychobilly. Digging into the roots of rock ‘n roll, she discovered blues artists like Skip James and J.B. Lenoir. Her most recent album, 2026’s Burn the House Down, makes room for it all. Even the flamenco textures of her European childhood make an appearance, as Volt uses the blues as a launchpad for an album that crosses borders and obliterates the idea of genre.

“Being true is always what resonates with me,” Volt said. “Often, bands make music for the fans or to fit into a certain genre, I believe that if you make art for itself, if it feels right, if you feel good doing it, then it will translate. People will appreciate it more because it’s real. It’s you. (With Burn the House Down,) we’re not looking at a polished jewel, but more a raw diamond.”

In addition to her latest album, Volt has released five others, including Shout Sister Shout! in 2023 which reached Number 2 on the Billboard Top Blues Albums Chart. She has toured extensively across the U.S. and Europe and has performed at major festivals including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Mammoth Bluesapalooza, Telluride Blues, Bilbao Blues Festival and Blues Peer. She was featured on 60 Minutes in October 2023, as a leading voice in the evolution of the modern blues. She has collaborated with Cedric Burnside and jammed onstage with Buddy Guy. She is equally at home on stage solo or with a band, and she
delivers the same high-energy, trance-driven sets that connect across generations and genres. It’s blues and roots-based music that’s physical, loud, and built for the live stage.

Ghalia Volt has spent more than a decade cementing her role as a leader of modern-day roots music. Already looking toward the next decade, she reminds us that true artists don’t just honor the traditions of the past, they create their own traditions, too.
