Spyro Gyra

They literally invented the contemporary jazz genre.  Spyro Gyra, formed by alto saxophonist Jay Beckenstein over 30 years ago, created their own unique fusion of Latin and R & B influences, resulting in a fresh new jazz sound.  The band released its debut commercial album in 1979, launching their first hit, “Morning Dance,” a calypso-inspired track that still enjoys frequent airplay on contemporary jazz stations.  The prolific GRAMMY-nominated group has released 20 albums to date, and continues to play to sell-out crowds.

Art Good, creator and host of the nationally syndicated “Jazz Trax” show, explains the band’s lasting appeal:  “Aside from one of the most amazing live shows in instrumental music and killer, killer songs, Spyro Gyra endures as an audience favorite because they created an original style that sounded like nothing that came before it.”
