THE TOKENS
Over 50 years ago, four boys from Brooklyn recorded “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” on the RCA label. The rest, as they say, is history. The Tokens’ classic doo-wop recording went on to become the number one hit in the nation and sell over 15 million copies worldwide. And the success was lasting: In a survey conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Record Industry Association of American, “Lion” placed 159th in the top 365 records of all time.
Altogether, the Tokens put nearly a dozen songs into the top 100, including “Tonight I Fell in Love,” “I Hear Trumpets Blow,” “When I Go to Sleep at Night” and “Portrait of My Love.” They were among the first vocal groups to successfully employ the technique of a falsetto lead voice, a sound that would later influence groups like the Four Seasons and the Beach Boys. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.
Today’s Tokens feature original founding members Mitch Margo (who was just 14 years old when “Lion” was recorded) and his older brother, Phil. They are joined by new members Jay Leslie, Mike Johnson and – keeping it all in the family – Phil’s son, Noah Margo.
The Tokens’ blend of showmanship, humor and excellent musicianship continues to make them a favorite headliner at venues worldwide.
