The Lyric Theatre Presents
Dave Bennett’s Tribute to Benny Goodman
Dubbed “The King of Swing,” Benny Goodman ushered in the national music craze of the Swing Era with his high energy take on the big band sound. Musically, he set a whole new standard for jazz, combining technical virtuosity with blazing swing rhythm and astounding improvisation.
Goodman’s timeless sounds and repertoire come to life once more under the talented direction of clarinetist Dave Bennett. You’ll swing the evening away to favorites like “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Body and Soul,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Moonglow,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy” and many more.
Bennett has the uncanny ability to recreate many of Goodman’s famous riffs and lines, balanced by substantial amounts of “free blowing” improv. Former Goodman band member Peter Appleyard calls Bennett “the closest to Goodman’s style and sound of all the major clarinetists of the past forty years.”
Bennett premiered his Tribute to Benny Goodman in 2003, and has performed it with symphony “pops” shows throughout the United States and Canada since 2005. His knowledge of and passion for the music – and his penchant for wire-rim glasses, spats and double-breasted suits – will transport you back to a swinging time!
